Final meeting and Internal Workshop

The project is almost finished and, accordingly, the final meeting has been carried out on 7th and 8th July. The meeting took place at GURAK facilities in San Sebastián (Spain) so all participants could check last advancements from the prototype and demo activities. During the first day, project  partners reviewed main results obtained during the last months and summarised next steps to be done in order to achieve a successful project completion. As for the second day, a ...

Project results dissemination and exploitation activities continue

In order to continue with the dissemination and exploitation of project results additional activities are being carried out. Specifically, RTDs from the project (Fraunhofer IGB, LEITAT and IDENER) have sent abstracts to the following conceferences: WASTES 2015 and the European Fuel Cell Conference. Moreover, in order to spread project foreground to wider audiences, a project Wikipedia page and a Youtube videoclip are currently under production. This will allow project partners to reach new population segments, different from traditional ...

Start-up phase and integration

During the last weeks, start-up phase and integration followed prototype construction. Anaerobic digestion start-up phase has been carried out at GURAK facilities while microbial fuel cell start-up has been carried out at LEITAT facilities in order to minimise the impact of equipment shipment and installation on electrogenic bacteria cultures.

Furthermore, the integration of both sub-systems has been carried out by IDENER and the SCADA visualisation and control system has been deployed. This way, the microbial fuel cells ...

10L Pre-commercial prototype construction

After the complete design of the prototype, MFC4Sludge partners have joined efforts in order to build the 10L pre-commercial protoype. Such prototype has been installed at GURAK facilities, more specifically, at Alduna in San Sebastian (Spain). There, at the wastewater treatment plant operated by GURAK, the prototype will be tested under real operational conditions. This will contribute to the technology upgrading, paving the way for market penetration.

A start-up phase follows the construction of the prototype and ...

10L Pre-commercial prototype design

MFC4Sludge partners have been working hard together and have just produced the preliminary design of the 10 L MFC based prototype to be deployed at GURAK facilities as base for the demonstration activities. This novel pre-commercial prototype will encompass a anaerobic digester of around 250L and a 10L MFC. Results from previous WPs have been used for the design of each subunit and for the development of the control strategies. Next steps are the production of Process Flow ...

RTDs attend EU-ISMET 2014 in Madrid

The three RTD performers from the project, namely Fraunhofer IGB, LEITAT and IDENER attended last week to the EU-ISMET 2014 meeting in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid (Spain). The three abstracts that were sent before summer were accepted for an oral presentation (DEVELOPMENT OF ON-SITE POWER GENERATION MODULAR SYSTEM FOR WASTEWATER SLUDGE VALORISATION USING A COMBINATION OF PARTIAL ANAEROBIC DIGESTION AND MICROBIAL FUEL CELL TECHNOLOGIES, carried out by Marta Macias Aragones, from IDENER) and two posters (AIR-CATHODE MFCS TO ...

MFC4Sludge is one year old!

The project is now one year old! During these twelve months all the partners have worked together in order to carry out the envisaged R&D tasks. Currently, WP1, 2 and 3, mostly devoted to basic research for each process area (anaerobic digestion, microbial fuell cell and control and automation, respectively) have finished and all the effort is being placed in the upcoming lab-scale prototype to be installed in LEITAT facilities as well as in the design of the ...

Dissemination activities: Abstracts sent to EU-ISMET 2014

Dissemination activities have been carried out in order to transfer project results to academic community. Specifically, abstracts have been sent to the upcoming EU-ISMET conference to be held in Madrid (Sept, 2014). The following abstracts have been produced by project partners:

  • A DYNAMIC 2D MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR TUBULAR-AIR CATHODE MICROBIAL FUEL CELLS USING CONDUCTION-BASED APPROACH FOR ELECTRONS TRANSFER TO THE BIOFILM AND VOLATILE FATTY ACIDS AS SUBSTRATE
  • DEVELOPMENT OF ON-SITE POWER GENERATION MODULAR SYSTEM FOR WASTEWATER SLUDGE VALORISATION ...
